ZeroWaste Pittsburgh

We have lots of history doing this type of work, under various PRC projects. We’ve worked with everyone from major, international retailers to one-person consulting firms, with the largest free outdoor event in the country in between.
Here’s a few municipal case studies --
Borough of Wilkinsburg
To compliment, enhance and support its curbside residential recycling program the Borough designed and installed a recycling drop-off program. The program targeted materials from both residential and commercial entities. This work included system design, equipment specs and purchasing, site location and the design and production of signage and other educational materials. This program currently provides residents and businesses with the opportunity to drop-off materials including co-mingled containers (plastic, glass and metal), mixed paper and corrugated cardboard.
Beaver County
The Beaver County Solid Waste Department designed and implemented recycling programs at four schools in the County. This included performing waste audits, identifying/purchasing collection/storage containers, identifying haulers/processors, training staff and the design and production of signage and other training materials. Each of the schools chose their focus project based on internal factors. The programs included implementation of in–school recycling, special event recycling and recycling at school sporting events.
City of Pittsburgh
On November 1, 2008, the City of Pittsburgh expanded its single stream recycling program to include all residents of the City. In addition to bottles, cans and newspapers, the City now collects magazines, catalogs, paperboard, junk mail, mixed paper, phonebooks, office paper and corrugated cardboard at the curb. The City’s recycling program generated over $1.2 million in revenues and cost savings in 2008.
· Curbside recycling tonnages increased by 31% from 2007: from 8,928 tons to approximately 10, 715 tons.
· The City received approximately $550,000 in recycling revenues in 2008.
· The City saved approximately $325,000 in landfill fees due to recycling and reduced landfill tonnage.
· The City received $315,054 in grants from the State for its recycling performance in 2007. This amount will increase due to the increased recycling in 2008.
*Figures are extrapolated for 2008 from year to date (January 1st to Novermber 30th, 2008).
